Pysanka: The Ukrainian Easter Egg in Canada |
|
05.07.2008 |
The Ukrainian Easter egg or pysanka is one of the most visible symbols of Ukrainian identity in Canada. What better time to explore this rich phenomenon than at the outset of the Easter season? The pysanka was an essential ritual attribute of the Easter celebration in rural peasant settings in Ukraine. As it exists today in Canada, the tradition is a product of over one hundred years of Ukrainian experiences in this country. PhD candidate in Ukrainian Folklore Mariya Lesiv views the evolution of this phenomenon in Canada in terms of four contrasting but interrelated sub-traditions: the Old Country, National/Ethnic, Popular, and Individualistic paradigms. This framework can contribute to a better understanding of not only Ukrainian but other ethnic experiences in new contexts. Start your Easter celebration with this stimulating presentation!
